Seraikella Chhau is one of the three major styles of Chhau dance, originating in the former princely state of Seraikella in present-day Jharkhand, India. Rooted in martial traditions and court culture, it evolved under royal patronage into a highly sophisticated dance form that blends elements of martial arts, ritual performance, music, and storytelling.

One of the defining features of Seraikella Chhau is its use of finely crafted masks, which cover the entire face and require dancers to express emotions through subtle movements of the body, head, neck, and limbs rather than facial expressions. This gives the style a restrained and nuanced aesthetic, emphasizing grace, precision, and internalized expression.

The repertoire includes stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas, as well as themes inspired by nature, animals, and everyday life. Accompanied by traditional percussion and wind instruments, the dance is known for its fluid choreography, stylized gait, and symbolic gestures. Today, Seraikella Chhau continues to be performed and taught across India and internationally, preserving a rich artistic tradition that reflects the region’s cultural heritage and creative excellence.
